Under a scintillating ride from Ken Tohill, Good Looker R F sped clear
to an impressive two and one-half length victory in the $125,000 La Coneja
Handicap at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Saturday.
Despite a recent stakes win against similar company at Zia Park, the
locally owned filly was let go as the 5-2 second choice in the field of
six going five and one-half furlongs.
Good Looker R F rated patiently under Tohill during the first quarter mile
while Lady Lance opened up a big lead setting a torrid pace. Tohill guided
his mount along the rail and moved past a tiring Lady Lance in upper
stretch. The grey roan daughter of Silver Season powered through the
stretch for a convincing score over arch rival Shezapirate.
Tohill said in the winner’s circle, “This mare is really training well. I really
appreciate Mr. Rogers for letting me ride her. I watched her in Farmington
and was really impressed. She’s just now blossoming. She did everything
right today. We will try and get her ready for the older horses.”
The emphatic three-year-old winner was timed in a sharp 1:03.9.
Good Looker R F earned $75,000 for the Rogers Farms of Clint, Texas.
The 6-time winner and 3-time stakes champ has earned over $260,000 in
her productive career.
Shezapirate found her best strides in mid-stretch but was no match for the
winner. The 7-5 favorite raced past Lady Lance with about 100 yards to go.
The runner-up earned $27,500 for owner Joseph Allen, Jr.
Lady Lance picked up a $12,500 paycheck for owner Thomas Pierce, Jr.
Flashy Dollarhide made his 870 yard debut a stakes winning one in the
high powered $125,000 Challenger Six Handicap.
Breaking from the #1 post position, Flashy Dollarhide broke alertly and took
command in the early stages. Rounding the turn, Flashy Dollarhide faced
stiff pressure from the 6-5 favorite Mr Frenchman.
The three-year-old gelded son of Genuine Strawfly responded bravely for jockey
J.J. Gonzales and pulled clear in mid-stretch to post a one and three-quarter
length victory over Mr. Frenchman and Shez Classy Now.
The winner was coming off a second place effort in the New Mexico Cup Classic
Derby at Zia Park on Nov. 11. The 9-5 second favorite defeated a top notch group
of New Mexico-bred distance Quarter Horses. His time was an excellent 44.75 seconds,
good for a 99 speed index. He is trained by the talented conditioner Suzanne Byrd.
Flashy Dollarhide picked up a $75,000 paycheck for owners Jay and Mary Lou
Standefer of Roswell, New Mexico. His career earnings have moved past the
$215,000.
The extremely consistent stakes winner Mr Frenchman tried his best but could not
overtake the winner.
Live racing resumes on Sunday at 12:15 p.m. The $125,000 Lou Wooten Handicap
is the featured 4th race. $339,805 stakes winner Dash Ta Moon is the 5-2 morning
line favorite.
