Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino (Sunday, April 6, 2008) Stonestreet Song delivered a powerful one and one-quarter length victory in the
$50,000 Daylight Sprint Handicap at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Sunday.
Well backed at 4-5 odds, Stonestreet Song stalked patiently behind the speed in the
six furlong sprint. The three-year-old Songandaprayer colt waited behind the dueling
leaders of Vinny V. and Mr. Golden Ruler. The big favorite settled nicely into stride before
taking dead aim on the top two horses.
Rounding the quarter pole, jockey Casey Lambert asked for run and Stonestreet
Song responded willingly with a burst of energy. He swept on by a determined
Vinny V. in deep stretch. Lambert simply hand rode his mount to victory for
trainer Steven Asmussen.
Lambert said in a post-race interview, “I just wanted to get him in a comfortable
position. Steve (Asmussen) told me to wait as long as possible since he had a good
eighth of a mile kick in him. Everything went to plan. I’m really happy. I’ve had a great
meet here.”
Stonestreet Song earned his third career win in a solid time of 1:09.52. The Oaklawn
Park shipper earned a $30,000 paycheck for the Stonestreet Stables of Lexington,
Kentucky.
Vinny V. ran courageously under jockey Travis Wales after setting a strong pace
with Mr. Golden Ruler. The runner-up held on tenaciously and earned $11,000 for
owner Harry Veruchi of Castle Rock, Colorado.
Chief of Thestreet closed belatedly to get third.
Quiet Again, Sir Stephen and Mr. Golden Ruler rounded out the order of finish.
