JJs Fast Gal Upsets At Zia Park In
Fillies And Mare Championship
HOBBS, New Mexico (December 1, 2007) - The Rogers
Farms' JJs Fast Gal, a 9-1 longshot, pulled off the
upset over even-money favorite Dash Ta Moon in the
$106,960 New Mexico Fillies and Mares Championship for
New Mexico-breds on Saturday afternoon at Zia Park.
Jockey Esgar Ramirez rode JJs Fast Gal over the 400
yards in :19.92 to get the head verdict. It was
another neck back to third-place finisher Lucky Fran
in the full field of 10 older mares.
JJs Fast Gal had last raced on August 19 at The Downs
at Albuquerque when she finished second to 2006
champion aged gelding Gotta Get in the Lineage
Championship. She was then rested after that race
against males and prepared for her return in the
Fillies and Mares Championship with a sharp
best-of-the-day work. The daughter of JJs Shot Glass
worked 330 yards in :17.21 for the quickest time from
12 horses working on October 8 at Zia Park.
"Every time she runs fresh, she does well," said
trainer Armando Quinanilla Jr. "She likes to run
fresh."
Runner-up Dash Ta Moon was the solid favorite
defending her title in the Fillies and Mares
Championship. She earned that favoritism by beating
open mares in the Lubbock Stakes and then running a
creditable third in the New Mexico Cup Championship
against males. Regular rider Carlos Madeira rode Dash
Ta Moon for trainer Joel Marr.
Third-place finisher Lucky Fran turned in her best
performance for trainer Mike Joiner from three starts
at Zia Park. She had finished off the board in two
starts against allowance company at the Hobbs track.
JJs Fast Gal rewarded her backers with $21.20, $7.40
and $3.80. Dash Ta Moon returned $4.00 and $3.00 while
Lucky Fran was worth $5.20 to show.
