Jjs Fast Gal roared on the outside to grab a neck victory in the $125,000
Lou Wooten Handicap at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Sunday.
With red hot Esgar Ramirez in the saddle, Jjs Fast Gal broke clear of traffic
and raced in fourth place midway home the 400 yard stakes race. The
four-year-old New Mexico-bred filly by Jj Shot Glass found her top gears
in deep stretch and burst past Mightys First Call just before the wire.
Jjs Fast Gal clocked the 400 yards in a quick 19.393 seconds. Her current
has sweetened with two consecutive stakes wins. She won the New
Mexico Cup Fillies and Mares Championship at Zia Park on Nov. 11.
The Lou Wooten victory was the second stakes triumph for the Rogers Farms
of Clint Texas. The Rogers Farms won the La Coneja Handicap on Saturday
with Good Looker R F.
Jjs Fast Gal earned $75,000, pushing her lifetime bankroll to over $205,000.
Winning jockey Esgar Ramirez collected his third winner of the day with
the Lou Wooten Handicap winner. He said after the race, “The filly ran a great
race. She gives all she’s got. Today, she was strong all the way.”
Trainer Armando Quintanilla, Jr. won his second straight stakes race of the
weekend.
Mightys First Call charged away from the gates early and battled for the
lead with Dash Ta Moon. The three-year-old filly fought valiantly with Roy
Baldillez in the saddle to earn second. The runner-up earned $26,250 pushing
her lifetime earnings $294,000.
Dash Ta Moon, the 5-2 post time favorite, finished one-length behind the winner
in third.
Racing resumes on Wednesday at 12:15 p.m.
The $400,000 Grade 1 Championship at Sunland Park sponsored by Certegy is set
for Saturday. Defending champion Gotta Get, Separate Bet, Let It Snowman and
Ketel Won are some of the
leading contenders in the 400 yard classic.
