Broke Sharply upset heavily favored Red Rock Creek in a dramatic stretch duel to win

the $50,000 Curribot Handicap at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Sunday.

Let go at nearly 8-1 odds, Broke Sharply held off a furious late rally from the 4-5

favorite to win the one and one-sixteenth mile feature by a neck.

Well positioned by jockey Duane Sterling, Broke Sharply angled out for the stretch

run and looked like a major threat. When challenged by Red Rock Creek, Broke

Sharply dug in and found plenty in reserve. The six-year-old gelded son of With

Approval would not be denied.

The Curribot Handicap winner was exiting a $20,000 claiming win at Sunland Park

on Jan 8. The 6-time winner brought his A game to the races on Sunday. He stopped

the clock in a good 1:43.19, just off the track record of 1:41.92.

Broke Sharply earned $30,000 for owner Richard Lueck of Northglenn, Colorado.

Mr. Lueck owned the former Sunland stakes winner Mr. Trieste.

A $2 win ticket on Broke Sharply was worth $17.80.

Under the direction of winning trainer Gary Cross, Broke Sharply has earned over

$160,000 from 27 starts..

The hard charging Red Rock Creek produced a gallant stretch run but could not

eclipse the winner. The 17-time winner responded well for jockey Casey Lambert

in mid-stretch. The runner-up earned $11,000 for owner-trainer Steven Asmussen.

Red Rock Creek has finished second in his last four stakes appearances.

Takin Issue finished over 4-lengths behind the winner in third place. He completed

a $2 trifecta worth $250.60.

Charismatic Cat and Shining Day were used up battling for pace supremacy. The duo

finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Live racing resumes on Tuesday at 12:55 p.m.
