Broke Sharply upset heavily favored Red Rock Creek in a dramatic stretch duel to win
the $50,000 Curribot Handicap at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Sunday.
Let go at nearly 8-1 odds, Broke Sharply held off a furious late rally from the 4-5
favorite to win the one and one-sixteenth mile feature by a neck.
Well positioned by jockey Duane Sterling, Broke Sharply angled out for the stretch
run and looked like a major threat. When challenged by Red Rock Creek, Broke
Sharply dug in and found plenty in reserve. The six-year-old gelded son of With
Approval would not be denied.
The Curribot Handicap winner was exiting a $20,000 claiming win at Sunland Park
on Jan 8. The 6-time winner brought his A game to the races on Sunday. He stopped
the clock in a good 1:43.19, just off the track record of 1:41.92.
Broke Sharply earned $30,000 for owner Richard Lueck of Northglenn, Colorado.
Mr. Lueck owned the former Sunland stakes winner Mr. Trieste.
A $2 win ticket on Broke Sharply was worth $17.80.
Under the direction of winning trainer Gary Cross, Broke Sharply has earned over
$160,000 from 27 starts..
The hard charging Red Rock Creek produced a gallant stretch run but could not
eclipse the winner. The 17-time winner responded well for jockey Casey Lambert
in mid-stretch. The runner-up earned $11,000 for owner-trainer Steven Asmussen.
Red Rock Creek has finished second in his last four stakes appearances.
Takin Issue finished over 4-lengths behind the winner in third place. He completed
a $2 trifecta worth $250.60.
Charismatic Cat and Shining Day were used up battling for pace supremacy. The duo
finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
