Hennessy took command on Saturday with a powerful two and
one-quarter length victory in the $217,555 Copper Top Futurity at
Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.
Well supported by the fans at 2-1, Bewild Hennessy avenged an earlier
defeat in the trials to Ballado's Bullet. The fleet colt by former
southwest runner Roll Hennessy Roll pulled clear of Ballado's Bullet in deep
stretch and left no doubt to his ability.
Jockey Alfredo Juarez, Jr. rode the winner for trainer Todd Fincher.
Winning owner Charles Hunter received a hefty first place check of
$108,777.
Bewild Hennessy now moves to the top of the class among
New Mexico-bred two-year-old Thoroughbreds. His speed was
extremely impressive. The winning time for the four and one-half
furlongs
was a crisp 50.80 seconds.
Ballado's Bullet ran a good second under jockey Freddie Martinez.
Waymore's Blues recovered from a slow start to earn a fast closing third
along the rail. Joe Martinez was his pilot.
